The samples of jute which are the subject of this report were forwarded to the Imperial Institute by the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, on behalf of the Governor of Hong Kong, and are referred to in his letter C.19503/26 of the 29th October, 1926. The letter was accompanied by copies of a letter from the Governor of Hong Kong and a report by the Superintendent, Botanical and Forestry Department.

It was stated that the fibre had been grown

in the New Territories and it was desired to ascertain

its quality and commercial value in connection with the question of establishing a jute industry in the Colony.

Description.

Sample No.1. This sample, weighing 14 lbs., consisted of four bundles of soft clean, lustrous, well-

brown prepared jute, varying in colour from light/topale cream. the fibre varied in length from 3 to 4 feet, being mostly about 3 feet, and was of good strength.

Sample No.2. This sample, weighing 11 oz.,

consisted of two bundles of fibre which was very similar

to No.1 but slightly weaker.

Both the samples were rather less soft and

lustrous
